Keynote Address
Kenneth Kressel, PhD

The Strategic Style:
Addressing Latent Causes of Conflict in Mediation

Dr. Kressel will describe an approach to mediation in which identifying and dealing with latent causes of dysfunctional conflict is a primary mediator activity. This so-called Strategic Style will be illustrated from intensive case studies of divorce mediation in a family court, the mediation of conflict among scientist at NIH, and the mediation of end of life health care conflicts. He will also discuss the social and professional reasons which may account for the low visibility of latent cause approaches in mediation.

Ken Kressel is a practicing mediator and psychotherapist, specializing in family and workplace conflict. He is also Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. His research on industrial, international, and interpersonal conflict management has appeared widely in professional and scholarly publications. He is the author of The Process of Divorce: How Professionals and Couples Negotiate Settlement and co-author of Mediation Research: The Process and Effectiveness of Third Party Intervention.
