Annabelle (Belle) Abaya [MA 2001] was appointed as the presidential adviser on the peace process by President Aroyo of the Philippines on Friday, October 23, 2009. Sheila McGinley [Certificate 2003] reports “Since completing the program at UMass Boston, I returned to New York City to work for the Liz Claiborne Foundation. I am currently the Director of the foundation as well as responsible for LCI's corporate philanthropic programs. In addition to pursuing my MS in Nonprofit Management at Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy, I recently married (my name is now Sheila McGinley Renovitch) and have settled with my husband in Stamford, CT.”
Madison (Matt) Thompson [CERT '03] has recently been appointed Director of Staff Diveristy in the Human Resources Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. Matt is also serving on the Board of Directors of the New England Association for Conflict Resolution.
Doron Pely [MA 2008] has founded and serves as the Executive Director of the Sulha Research Center for the study of Traditional Dispute Resolution in the Middle East http://www.sulha.org/ For more details, see the Alumni Profiles page.
Sarah Gyorog [MA 2004] volunteers as a Workshop Facilitator in the Alternatives to Violence Program, an international organization which conducts workshops in conflict resolution and alternative ways to respond to and recognise our own violence, for prisons, community groups, and schools. She is presently employed at Washington University in St. Louis as the Graduate & International Programs Coordinator at the School of Law.
Katie Schroeder O'Malley [MA 2007] reports "I am now working full time for a Yoga Teacher Training Organization that operates 5 schools across New England and as you can imagine (even in the economic downturn) is growing fast! To my surprise and delight, I do a TON of mediating, negotiating contracts with Studio Owners, interviewing new yoga teachers, event planning etc. I am also a Certified Yoga Teacher and teach seven yoga classes a week. Most importantly, I am writing a conflict resolution curriculum for the Yoga school's 500 hour Yoga Therapist Program (puting my MP to use!!!)."
Sarah Woodside[ MA '06] left her position at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School to become a fulltime student in the PhD Program at Boston College. Sarah is also teaching undergrauate courses in Negotation at Bentley University in Waltham, MA.
Oleksiy (Alex) Burchevskyy [MA '07], originally from Kiev, Ukraine, is living in Budapest and working as General Counsel for WizzAir, a low-cost airline headquatered in Hungary and serving Central Europe. Alex reports his work has him travelling all over Europe; "I am happy, but miss Boston and DisRes people."
Sarah Minkin, who completed her coursework in 2004 and is currently completing her Masters Project, has recently taken a position as ADR Staff Assistant in the District of Columbia Court System in Washington D.C. where she is working with Jeannie Adams [MA '04].
John Lewis Moore, who completed his coursework in 2008 and is currently completing his Masters Project, became Program Manager of Coexistence International in September 2008. For more deatils, see the Alumni Profiles page.
Yusuf Tanko, who completed his coursework in 2008 and is currently completing his Masters Project, became the Secretary [Deputy Director] of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The Centre offers Masters and doctoral degrees in Peace and Development Studies under three programs: Peace and Governance; Peace and the Environment; and Strategic Studies.
Articles in NEACR Newsletter Highlight UMB DisRes Alumni
Two articles in the Fall 2008 Newsletter highlight the work being done by 5 different DisRes alumni. An article by Associate Director Roni Lipton describes the workplace activities of Jon Braley [MA'00], Susan Morash [MA'04], Helen Barrington [MA'06], and Jerry Fletcher [MA'08] that draw on their conflict resolution skills. An interview with Camilo Azcarate [MA'00] focuses on his work as Ombudsman at Princeton University.

Article in UMB Alumni Magazine Celebrates 20th Anniversary
The UMass Boston Magazine [summer 2007] features a story on the Dispute Resolution program in honor of its 20th anniversary. The story quoted extensively from an interview with founder and director David Matz and mentioned the accomplishments of several of our alumni: Jeannie Adams [MA 2004]; Camilo Azcarate [MA 1999]; and Jon Braley [MA 2000].
